Marie Minou

St. Louis No. 1 dates back to 1789 and is the oldest surviving cemetery in New Orleans. The tombs in this famous cemetery were originally constructed of soft red brick and were later covered with plaster and paint to preserve them from the elements. Even the walls of St Louis No. 1 were used for burial since high ground was at a premium. The old wall burial places were and still are referred to as "wall ovens" because they resembled ovens used for baking bread. Among the numerous famous and infamous people who have been buried at St Louis No. 1 cemetery is Marie Laveau, New Orleans' most notorious voodoo queen.
