StreetCat
Named Desire
The Desire Line
originated in 1920. It served the Faubourg Marigny residential
district and the bar and nightclub section of the French Quarter in 1947
when "A Streetcar Named Desire" opened on the Broadway
stage. When Blanche DuBois came to New Orleans to visit her sister
Stella and her sister's husband Stanley Kowalski, she had to take the
Desire streetcar to get to their apartment. The New Orleans
streetcar line has been in continuous operation longer than any other
streetcar line in the U.S.A. The streetcars currently in operation
were built in the 1920's. A streetcar ride is still a must for any
visitor to New Orleans.
